The photojournalist's house | House in Portoferraio
1 Bedroom House in Portoferraio Old Town, Portoferraio
My name is Federico Tovoli. I am a professional photographer primarily focused on photojournalism. I work with national and international magazines, institutions, and private companies, and I also teach photography.
During the warmer months, I am often away for work—sometimes nearby, sometimes very far away. While I’m gone, my home is available for guests who want to stay in a place that feels like visiting friends. Thanks to modern connectivity, I’m always reachable and can assist you remotely, while a trusted collaborator will be on-site to welcome you and provide local support.
The apartment consists of two rooms that can be turned into three with a partition: two in the sleeping area and one in the living area, plus a bathroom. There are four sofa-style beds—two singles and one double—so that during the day the rooms can be enjoyed as living spaces and at night transformed into sleeping areas. The house is fully equipped for a comfortable stay, including Wi-Fi, a washing machine, ceiling fans, and an induction oven. Bed linens are provided, and laundry can be air-dried outside the window in the sun.
Since this is my actual home and not a seasonal rental, you’ll find elements of my personal world and work throughout: installations, walls that some describe as artistic, my photographs, photography books, my collection of National Geographic magazines, and some fiction as well.
The house is in what I would call a strategic location, halfway between Villa dei Mulini—the residence of Napoleon Bonaparte—and the seafront promenade, known locally as the Calata.
The street is quiet, yet just steps away from the lively evening scene, with aperitivo bars, restaurants, pizzerias, piano bars, and a local craft market.
Who this home is for
It’s ideal for those who want to feel at home, who are curious, who enjoy peaceful surroundings, and who wish to explore the area beyond the beach. It suits travelers more than tourists—people who prefer independence and are comfortable managing things on their own. It’s also for those who don’t mind not having a parking spot right outside the door. There are three parking areas about a three-minute walk away. Portoferraio is small, and I tend to measure distances in walking time: from the ferry terminal to the house it’s a 13-minute walk or three bus stops.
Who this home is not for
It’s not for those looking for a sterile, typical “beach house” style accommodation, or for those who expect the beach just across the street. While the sea is at the end of the road, the nearest beaches—Le Ghiaie and Le Viste—are a 7–10 minute walk in another direction. It’s also not suitable for those who expect hotel-style service with constant, real-time assistance.
