Traditional Townhouse In Bordighera Alta | House in Bordighera
2 Bedroom House in Bordighera
Built in the 16th century, this beautiful townhouse with arched ceilings, thick walls and countless historical features offers a wonderful step back in time and the unique opportunity to live like a local. The house has been furnished with antiques kepping the typical Italian flair.
Architecturally, the house is narrow and tall. Each floor is linked by a stone fly of stairs (between 10 and 13 stairs per floor).
On the first floor, the main bedroom is a fresh and quiet room with 2 single beds (90cm wide). Many books in English and German are at your disposal to read during your holidays.
On the staircase connecting the first and second floor you will find the toilet. It is important to point out that since the house was built in 1600 a toilet was not foreseen so it has been added very space efficiently. Our taller guests may have to duck a bit .
On the second floor, the living room has a flat screen TV with German and American satellite channels and comfortable double bed with a firm mattress.
On the third floor, the traditional kitchen is next to the dining table for up to 6 guests. Tucked away by the window you will find a recently renovated shower room hidden between 2 walls.
On the 4th floor, the roof terrace comes with a large dining table, a lounge chair and uninterrupted sunshine all day!
Overview:
Didi’s home is located inBordighera,Liguria,Italy.
Located in Bordighera Alta, which is the old town with all houses and historic buildings maintained beautifully. The house is a corner away from the main piazza with its church where many restaurants and few shops provide a lively atmosphere.
Down the park lined with old pines and rose bays, the seafront has a long pebble beach with both public and comfortable beach clubs to suit every type of holidaymaker. The sea in and around Bordighera is known for its cleanliness. The water temperature in the summer months goes up to 25C.
Bordighera is located at 20 km from France and it is possible to see the French coast with a naked eye from the town. Having the "Capo Sant’Ampelio" which protrudes into the sea, it is the southernmost commune of the region.
Since Bordighera is built where the Maritime Alps plunge into the sea it benefits from the Foehn effect which creates a special microclimate that has warmer winters.
My Bordighera
Since I am a child I have spent my holidays in Bordighera which has made this little Italian town my second home. It makes me very happy to welcome you in this special place.
The house in which you are staying was built in the 16th century and has been my family’s holiday home for nearly 30 years now. Before us, the house was owned by a local Italian family for many generations. When we bought it, we found the diaries of a fisherman that had lived there at the turn of the century, giving us a unique insight into local life. To this day, we maintain the authentic architecture and aesthetic of the house with much attention to detail.
Here a few of my favorite Bordighese experiences:
Restaurants
Il Saraceno
Via Bastioni, (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Bordighera
With a humble façade and décor one can already guess this is a traditional family run place. Famous for their Seafood Risotto, Italians come as far as from Turino for it.
LIDO
Lungomare Argentina, 5, 18012 Bordighera
This is my favorite beach restaurant. Open from May until October the fresh seafood dishes are spectacular as are the homemade desserts. The couple running the place are lovely as is all the staff. Many summer lunches filled with laughter and friends have happened here.
Please book ahead and note that most staff speak some English.
Beach Club
There are a variety of beach clubs where you can rent loungers for 15eur per day per person. My personal favorite:
Sant'Ampelio Beach & Restaurant
Lungomare Argentina, 3, 18012 Bordighera
The couple running the club, Mauro and Cincia, are absolute sweethearts. This is also one of the few clubs that offers paddle boards, canoes, and floating loungers at no extra cost. They also have a private lifeguard which is great if you are traveling with children. Cincia speaks fluent French and some English. There are many regulars and mostly Italian guests, so it makes for a great authentic experience. The restaurant is good for a snack, but for lunch or dinner head to the LIDO or Caranca beach club next door.
Nightlife
The old town is very popular with locals for dinner and drinks. Throughout the year little festivals around Bordighera are organized, which generally include music and food. In the summer months, most restaurants and bars by the beach will have music, even live bands and offer rich cocktail menus. There is the Kursaal Club further down the Lungomare for those that want to dance a bit.
Activities
On the first floor of the house in the bookshelf you will find many guides for Bordighera and the surrounding areas.
My highlights
Markets
A great Italian experience are the weekly markets. The market in Bordighera is every Thursday morning and last until about one. It is along the Lungomare, so the road going along the beach.
You will find everything here from outlet designer wear, leather goods, kitchen ware and of course local delicacies.
Ventimiglia has an all-day market along the beach on Fridays and San Remo has the market on Tuesday and Saturday morning around their market hall at the tip of the old town.
Hikes/Walks
From Bordighera Alta you can walk to Sasso and Seborga along a marked path. Seborga being the longer hike takes about three hours uphill, but it is beautiful and truly worth it. Seborga is the smallest principality in Italy and has a unique charm.
Biking
The area is famous with bikers as there are various lovely trails. For more info on this please check with the local tourist office or online.
